# Permanent Magnet Generator In-Depth

I’ve received quite a lot of emails asking me to explain how exactly, in technical terms, a permanent magnet generator works. I am happy that so many people seem to catch up and show interest in the newest technology and how to build one for their own homes to generate free electricity.

A permanent magnet generator is not a perpetual motion machine in the sense of a machine that is running indefinitely without an additional power source. It is also not a machine that “produces” more energy than it consumes, and therefore does not violate the first and/or second law of thermodynamics.

## Is It Possible To Generate Free Electricity For Your Home With A Permanent Magnet Generator?

Yes, it is definitely possible and in this article I will explain the functionality of a permanent magnet generator much more in-depth.
If you are not so much interested in how exactly it works and just want to build one for your own home you can get the plans here, without finishing this article: Build your own permanent magnet generator now!

## Permanent Magnet Generators Are Already In Use:

Permanent magnet generators just like the one you can have in your own home to produce free electricity are already used in today’s technology. The example below shows how it is being used in new generation wind turbines to generate free electricity.

Personal note: Permanent magnet generators are found in wind turbines, why do some people doubt it when the talk about magnet generators goes into the personal-use direction?

## How Exactly Does A Permanent Magnet Generator Work?

The scheme illustrates the functionality of a permanent magnet generator, a simple magnet generator as shown in the image to the left has a coil of wire rotating in a magnetic field. The continuous current in the coil is supplied via two brushes that make moving contact with an abrasive ring. The coil lies in a steady magnetic field. The forces exerted on the wires transmitting the current create a torque on the coil. The torque generated in one cycle varies with the vertical separation of the two forces, it is therefore dependent on the sine of the angle between the axis of the coil and the magnet field.

At a constant angular coil velocity (w), it will produce an AC (sinusoidal) electromotive force (emf). The change in flux over time is Faraday’s law, and in this case the generation of the emf causes a change in flux over time.

So Faraday’s law would result in:
$emf =- d\Phi/dt =- (d/dt) (NBA cos \Phi)$
$= NBA sin \Theta (d\Theta/dt) = NBA\omega sin \omega t.$

Similar as in a DC motor, the endings of the coil are connected to a split ring, whose in turn contacted by the brushes. Note that the brushes and split ring basically recalibrate the electromagnetic field that is produced and the contacts are organized so that the current will always flow in the same direction, because when the coil turns past the dead spot, where the brushes meet the gap in the ring, the connections between the ends of the coil and external terminals are reversed.

Does That Mean I Can Generate Free Electricity To Power My Home Only By Using A Permanent Magnet Generator?
Not quite, you will always need to feed your generator a certain amount of electricity so it will never be possible to completely replace your electricity provider. But you can reach pretty high levels and as I already mentioned generate most of the energy for your own home through a magnet generator. Saving 70% – 90% of your electricity cost is definitely possible, while the average lies around 50% savings.

Can Anyone Build A Permanent Magnet Generator?
In my humble opinion yes, anybody. It really isn’t complicated, all steps are lined out and all you have to do is to buy the material you need. Once you got everything together the level of skill needed to put the permanent magnetic generator together is comparable with the skill you need to put an IKEA table together yourself.

Where Can I Get The Plans?
You can get the plans right here, those are the best plans I have found on my own journey through the internet, the generator is as I’ve already mentioned very easy to build and the materials you need can easily be bought at any home depot store. Plus, it is also one of the cheapest plans, if I had to rate it I would give it 10/10 for the best price and the overall completeness of the generator plans.
